Cities are the anchor points of our society, and as such, they face enormous challenges. The key strategy is to make them smarter and more sustainable. It is the advances in technologies and the disruptive power of the Internet-of-things which is allowing us to improve our cities in before unimaginable ways. Many great cities in the world are already leveraging its potentials, making urban areas a better place to live, work and play in.
This might be true for the great metropolises, but, what about the places most of us live in, like Belgrade, Novi Sad, Zagreb or Sarajevo? Do urban centers in this part of Europe have the potentials, the capacities, and the vision to join the ranks of a European smart city community? Who are the most important auteurs and innovators in this region? What are the business opportunities, e.g. for start-ups? How can citizens help improve their cities? The answers to these, and many other questions might surprise you - positively.
Join us at #SCF17 to participate or just learn more about the challenges, opportunities, and trends in urban innovation.
Guests of SCF17 will be able to engage in various activities, such as the three-day conference, a 48-hour hackathon, workshops, Fuck-up Nights, education activities for children and the Smart Cities Challenge Serbia 2017. As world urbanization continues to grow and the total population expected to double by 2050, there exists an increased demand for intelligent, sustainable environments that reduce environmental impact and offer citizens a high quality life. A smart city brings together technology, government and society to enable the following characteristics; a smart economy; smart mobility; a smart environment, smart people, smart living and of course smart governance. Half of the world population is living in cities in 2013, population in cities is expected to grow from 3.6 Billion to 6.3 Billion by 2050. Over 50% of urbanization involves cities of less that 500K people. While this opens up significant opportunities in economic growth, it also creates many challenges to be addressed including; Population explosion, High cost of living, Rising levels of pollution, Increased crime rates, Over investment in infrastructure requirements -- $10 Trillion by 2025, Exponential growth of data and Potential cultural clashes. One approach being pursued in many parts of the world is to increase the awareness of the urban environment and to enhance the interaction with its inhabitants. This is typically characterized as the evolution towards Smart Cities.

Our cities are at the forefront of addressing global challenges, like climate change, globalization, and sustainable development. In a shrinking digital world, cities are expected to combining competitiveness and sustainable urban development. The international Smart Cities Festival will offer ideas on how almost every city, anywhere, not only the biggest and wealthiest ones, can step up their game and raise urban quality for citizens and create more competitive eco-systems for local businesses.
Why is it high time for decision makers and businesses to embrace IoT and why it will pay off? Why smart city policies and investments can bring benefit for citizens, businesses, and local governments? Why education is the key to reach sustainable development and stay competitive in the future?
What local resources and talents are there already, but stakeholders might not even know about? What can we do to become more competitive in a globalized world and what are the best-practices in the region?
How do "they" do it and how can we adapt successful models to our local needs, with our local talent and resources? How to bring together local governments, businesses, start-ups and citizens to get things done better?
Where are the leading smart cities and what can we learn from them? Where to start on and what to ignore, for now?
Who are the leading organizations and stakeholders in the region? Who is supporting initiatives and projects?
